William F. Lutz, 92, a lifelong proud Brocktonian, passed away Sept. 2, 2025. Born on Oct. 10, 1932 in the Campello section of Brockton Bill was a son of the late Ernest and Hilma (Enquist) Lutz and graduated from Brockton High School in 1950 with his beloved late wife Barbara Jeanne (MaDan). Both served on their Class Reunion Committees for decades and enjoyed bringing their former classmates together decades after their graduation from the ‘old’ High School.
In his youth Bill was an active swimmer, basketball player and golfer, holing an ace at age 9 and winning City Championships in swimming and basketball. He was inducted to the Brockton Athletic Hall of Fame as a Swimmer. His love of athletics carried over to watch his children (and grandchildren) swim and play basketball competitively and he was a lifelong supporter of Brockton High Athletics. Bill enjoyed golf well into his later years and would often hole impossible putts with his legendary wooden shafter putter.
Bill was proud to have served his country for the US Army in the Korean War as a Military Policeman.
People knew William as Bill, Will, Willy ‘Lump Lump’, Bumpah or Grampy and but most Brocktonians knew him as a shoe salesman as he worked his entire life into his 80’s fitting people ‘old style’ to ensure sure they got the right fit. He worked at Edgar’s, Carriuolo Shoes, Hanlon’s, Merril’s, Michaelson’s and Macy’s. At age 75 he received an ‘Oldest Worker’ award in Washington DC and received a flag and commendation.
But Bill’s true passion was his Bride of 65 years Barbara. He would plant and nurture her favorite roses and drove her to work each day and to vacations in Florida, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Newport and the Cape to enjoy their time together. He doted on his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Bill was the beloved father of Gale Lutz-Henrickson and her husband Lee, Paula Rowe and her late husband Peter, and Eric Lutz and his wife Kristina, all of Brockton; devoted grandfather of Holly, Dennis, Danny, Crystal, Suzie, Annika, Katarina, Niko, and Gunnar; great-grandfather of Tyler, Gabriel, and Henry; brother of Lee Lutz of Dartmouth and the late Anita Haugen; brother-in-law of Avis MaDan, and an uncle of many nieces and nephews.
All are welcome to calling hours Monday Sept. 8th from 4 to 7 p.m. at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton, his funeral service Tuesday Sept. 9th at 10 a.m. at Waitt Funeral Home and burial at Melrose Cemetery.
