William E. Smith, 83, of Brockton since 1966, passed away Dec. 4, 2022 at home surrounded by his family after a valiant battle with cancer. Born in Cambridge, a son of the late Elroy and Ethel (Chase) Smith, he graduated from Charlestown High School in 1958. Bill was a member of Princemen Drum & Bugle Corps. His career as a mechanic for industrial sewing machines spanned from 1959 at Reliable Sewing Machine in Boston until its closure in Stoughton in 2012, then at Ann’s Fabrics in Canton until this year. He was a Boy Scout Assistant Master of Troop B in Brockton. Bill was the beloved husband of Alice (MacKinnon) Smith for 60 years; loving father of Sheila Smith and her wife Patricia Malanson of Auburn, William Smith and his wife Marlene of Sala, Sweden, Susan Coffey and her husband Mark of North Easton, and Kevin Smith and his wife Nancy of East Bridgewater; dear grandfather of Sissela Smith of Norrkoping, Sweden, Samuel Smith of Sala, Sweden, Jacob Coffey of North Attleboro, Benjamin Coffey of North Easton, Kaeleigh Smith of East Bridgewater, Kevin Smith of Seattle WA and Sarah Smith of New London CT; brother of Richard and his wife Ellen of Medfield, Marion Ferguson of Dorchester, Sandra Smith of Gloucester, and the late John Smith and his widow Mary of Chelmsford, and the late Gladys Harney, Helen Broderick and Oscar Smith; and an uncle of many nieces and nephews. All are welcome to calling hours Friday Dec. 9th from 4 to 7 p.m. and his funeral service Sat. Dec. 10th at 10:30 a.m. all at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton and burial at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Brockton VNA Hospice or Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
