William Wallace Obituary

William Robert (Rob) Wallace, age 70, passed away on Sunday, January 3, 2021 after a difficult battle with Covid.  Rob was the son of the late Wilbur A. Wallace and Hazel C. (Buckley) Wallace of Brockton.  Rob was a life-long Brockton resident who graduated from Brockton High School in 1968.  While at BHS he was an excellent student and popular member of the golf team which won many tournaments.

Rob spent several years in the US Army and deployed to VietNam where he was awarded the Bronze Star for meritorious service as a Sergeant with the 2nd Battalion, 94th Artillery, A Battery.

Rob was a skilled craftsman who worked with his good friend Al Pezzano for the past 30 years.  He was known for his meticulous work and ability to share his knowledge with younger colleagues.  In his spare time he built beautiful pieces of furniture and enjoyed astronomy using a telescope that he built himself.  He also possessed great mechanical abilities which he used to build engines and maintain vehicles for years. But his real passion was golf.  From a young age he was a steady presence on the greens and fairways of DW Field Golf Course in Brockton.  He participated in the City Open and Four Ball tournaments annually for more than 50 years, bringing home the Open’s winning trophy for the field in 2002.  There was rarely a day that he wasn’t seen practicing his putting and chipping at the course before or after a round with fellow golfers.  Rob was a thoughtful brother, father, son, uncle, and friend, whose quiet wisdom, and ever-present spark of fun will be missed by all.

He is survived by a son, Robert Matthew, of Florida, and two granddaughters.  He also leaves seven siblings:  Jane Curelli (husband John) of Oak Bluffs, Stephen Mills (wife Susan) of Falmouth, Judy Wallace of North Fort Myers, FL, Mimi Dodson of Palos Verdes Estates, CA, Charles Wallace of Brockton, Timothy (wife Diane) of Brockton, and Philip (wife Kim) of Marshfield.  His brothers Wilbur (Skip) and David predeceased him.  He also leaves many nieces and nephews, cousins and Aunt Georgette Buckley.  Rob will be laid to rest at the National Cemetery in Bourne where his father and brother Skip are interred.  All are welcome to calling hours Thursday, Jan. 7, 2021 from 4 to 7 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton. Masks, social distancing and guest limits required, procession Friday 7:45 a.m. leaving Waitt Funeral Home to National Cemetery for 9 a.m. committal.
