William J. Smith

William J. Smith, 96, of Brockton, passed away on August 7, 2023. Born in Boston, he was the son of the late William F. and Matilda (Bulens) Smith. William served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War. He was a shipyard sheet metal mechanic for many years until his retirement. William enjoyed fishing and woodworking and was known for his birdhouses and crosses.

William was the husband of the late Janet L. (Beliveau) Smith for 72 years until her passing in 2022; beloved father of William T. Smith (and Joan) of FL, Diane Ford (and Paul) of NH, Leonard Smith (and Kathy) of MO, JoAnn Boylen (and Richard) of RI, Ronald Smith (and Kelley) of NH, and Laurie Soncrant (and Stephen) of Stoughton; loving grandfather of 17; great-grandfather of 13; brother of the late Thomas M. Smith and his wife Maura; and an uncle of many nieces and nephews.

All are welcome to memorial calling hours on Sunday, Aug. 20th from 1-3 p.m., followed by a 3 p.m. memorial service in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St., Brockton. Live streaming of William’s memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. Private committal at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne will take place at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Shriners Hospitals for Children.
