Stephen J. Whittaker

Stephen J. Whittaker, 73, of Brockton for over 50 years, died November 11, 2021. Born in Medway, he was a son of the late Frederick and Ann (Keefe) Whittaker and leaves a brother Bruce J. Whittaker of Exeter, N.H. Stephen was a 1965 graduate of Avon High School, where he played varsity basketball and soccer. He attended Northeastern University and Quincy Jr. College, later graduating from Bridgewater State College with a Master’s Degree.

Stephen taught elementary education in Brockton Public Schools, starting at Downey and for many years at Brookfield School. He was also a key administrator for Brockton Community Schools evening classes. Among his many accomplishments, Steve also developed Brockton’s Community After School Program. He was an invaluable asset to the community and played an active role in the Massachusetts Teachers Union. Fellow administrators and teachers described him as a loyal friend who worked well with everyone. His students referred to him as, “The Big Huge Teddy Bear”.

He was generous to all and had a big personality. Stephen was an avid college football fan, especially Boston College games, where he hosted magnificent tailgate parties for over 50 years. He enjoyed summers at Dexter Beach in Marion and sailing in the bay.

Stephen leaves his beloved companion of 39 years Theresa “Betty” Hart and her children Deborah Keefe of Billerica, Donna Lee and partner Charles Turner of Billerica, and Robert Hart and wife Kathleen of Newton; 7 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren; and many cousins and friends.
