Sister Stephen Marie Barney, C.J.C., a Poor Sister of Jesus Crucified and the Sorrowful Mother, died on Saturday, January 9, 2021. Daughter of the late John and Genevieve Barney of Plymouth, Pennsylvania, Juliana Lillian Barney grew up and was educated in Plymouth, PA. She entered religious life on September 8 1951 at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent, Brockton; at her reception she became known as “Sister Stephen Marie”. She earned a B.A. in English Literature from Stonehill College, MA. In Scranton, PA she received an M.A.in Religious Studies at Marywood College and later an M.A. in English Literature at the University of Scranton. She taught in community parochial grade schools in Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania: including Annunciation, Frackville; Saints Peter and Paul, Tamaqua; Holy Trinity, Wilkes-Barre; and Our Lady of Mount Carmel, Carbondale. She has been a CCD teacher, a classroom teacher, a principal, and a librarian. Sr. Stephen Marie resided at St. Mary’s Villa Convent, Elmhurst, PA and was a staff member in the Vocations Department of the Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter in Scranton, PA until her retirement when she returned to the Motherhouse in Brockton and volunteered at the Brockton Public library and continued teaching English to the Vietnamese sisters at the Convent. She is survived by her relatives in Pennsylvania and members of her religious community, the Sisters of Jesus Crucified in Brockton. A private Funeral Mass will take place in OLS Convent Chapel, Thatcher Street, Brockton.
