Sister Geraldine Nevaras CJC

​Sister Geraldine Nevaras, C.J.C., a Poor Sister of Jesus Crucified and the Sorrowful Mother, died on Friday, June 25, 2021. Born in South Boston, daughter of the late Joseph and Frances (Norkaitis) Nevaras (most recently of Stoughton) she was educated in South Boston public schools and then entered religious life on February 2, 1947.  As a Sister of Jesus Crucified in Brockton, she was called “Sr. Marie Jerome”; later she returned to using her baptismal name “Sister Geraldine”.  Having earned a B.S. Degree in Education from Misericordia College, Dallas, PA , she taught in community grade schools in Massachusetts:  Immaculate Conception, Cambridge; St. Casimir, Brockton, St. George, Norwood.  She was teacher and principal in St. Casimir, Amsterdam, New York and in St. Vincent, Girardville, Pennsylvania. At New Hampshire College she received a Master’s Degree in Human Services.  From 1973 to 1991 she was the licensed Nursing Home Administrator of St. Joseph Manor Nursing Home, Thatcher Street.  She was a member of the Board of Registration of Nursing Home Administrators and the Board of Old Colony Y, Brockton.  She held terms as Trustee at St. Joseph Manor, St. Mary’s Villa (Penn.), and at Cardinal Cushing Hospital.  She was Director of the Archdiocesan Office of Elder Services. When she was Coordinator of Admissions and Director of Mission Services for St. Joseph Nursing Care Center in Dorchester, she resided at St. Peter Convent in South Boston. She served as a General Councilor for twelve years.  She was a Director of Temporary Professed Sisters, Director of CJC Partners and Administrator of the Motherhouse. Survived by her sister Evelyn Nevaras of Bridgewater and her brother Joseph and his wife Linda Nevaras of Abington, by nephews Joseph J. Nevaras of New Bedford and Jeffrey S. Nevaras of W. Bridgewater and three grandnieces Cassie, Alex and Violet. Visiting hours are on  Wed. June 30th from 2 to 6 p.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent, 261 Thatcher Street, Brockton.  The Funeral Mass will take place in OLS Convent Chapel, Thatcher Street, Brockton, on Thursday, July 1st at 10:30 a.m. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Poor Sisters of Jesus Crucified, Our Lady of Sorrows Convent, 261 Thatcher St. Brockton MA 02302.
