Shirley Reid Obituary

Shirley Theresa (Mannix) Reid passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 19, 2026, at the age of 94. Born and raised in Brockton, Shirley was the daughter of the late William and Mary (Frazier) Mannix.

She is survived by her sisters, Elizabeth Francey of San Antonio, Texas, and Katherine Wilbur of Brockton, Massachusetts. She was predeceased by her sister, Mildred Brophy.

Shirley married her beloved husband, Donald Reid, who predeceased her. Together, they made their home on North Quincy Street in Brockton, where they raised their family.

Shirley was the loving mother of Daniel Reid (predeceased), David Reid and his wife, Luann, William Reid (predeceased) and his wife, Sheri, Brenda DeAcetis and her husband, Steven, and Ricky and Lois Reid. She is also survived by her two stepsons, Donald Reid and Steven Reid, and their families.

She was the beloved grandmother of David Reid, Donny Reid, Bobby Kahler, Crystal Berte, Ricky Reid, Theresa Reid, Alycia Canha, Billy Reid, Zachary Reid, and Danielle Reid. She also leaves behind 14 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.

Shirley was truly one of a kind. She could light up a room with her infectious smile and contagious laugh. She was a kind and caring woman who loved her family deeply. Shirley never hesitated to give a warm hug and a big kiss, making everyone around her feel loved and welcome.

After her husband, Donald passed away, Shirley spent many years behind the counter at Dorothy Lou’s Bakery in Brockton. Later, she worked at the Jewish Community Center, where she cared for children of all ages. She also devoted many years to caring for the Hermann and Almekies children, who became just like grandchildren to Shirley.

Shirley enjoyed weekly shopping trips to local department stores. She loved vacationing with her family in Maine, New Hampshire, Aruba and Florida, as well as yearly trips to Texas to visit with her sister Betty. She loved spending time at the beach and sitting on the back deck watching the birds come to the feeder. She enjoyed listening to country music and could often be found country line dancing with her late partner, Ralph Philbrick. She loved family gatherings and “big parties” to celebrate any occasion. She loved to snuggle up and watch a “good program,” and was an avid General Hospital fan.

Above all, Shirley loved spending time with her family and friends. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She had a wonderful sense of humor and a zest for life. Her warmth, laughter, generosity, and love will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew her.
