Ruth M. (Bakutis) Barry, 90, a lifelong resident of Brockton, passed away June 1, 2024 after a brief illness. Born in Brockton to the late Edward and Stephania “Stella” (Dombroski) Bakutis, she was a 1951 graduate of Brockton High School and 1954 graduate of Massachusetts General Hospital School of Nursing and began nursing there. After her marriage to the late William F. Barry Sr. and starting their family she had a 40-plus year career at Brockton Hospital as a registered nurse in pediatrics.
Ruth was dedicated to her family first and in retirement she volunteered at Kennedy School in their reading program, and at Our Lady of Lourdes food pantry and St. Paul’s Church soup kitchen. She enjoyed chocolate, ice cream, sweets, (especially Gowell’s Homemade Candy), reading, and the beach. Until becoming ill 6 weeks ago Ruth still loved sleepovers with her grandchildren.
Ruth was the wife of the late William, beloved mother of Lisa Barry of Rockland, Laura Barry (and Eric Snow) of Brockton with whom she lived, Lt. William Barry Jr. B.P.D. (and his wife Deena) of Halifax and Patricia Martin (and her husband Brian) of Pembroke; loving grandmother of Sarah Allen (and her husband Richard), Amy Barry, Rachel Polsi (and her husband Christopher), Mitchell Martin and the late Hunter Snow; sister of Thomas Bakutis (and his wife Joan) of Plymouth and the late Irene Driscoll and Eugene St. Sauveur Jr.; great-grandmother of Caleb Allen; she leaves many nieces and nephews, cousins and friends including Mary Ann Eason of N. Falmouth and Helen Brown of VA.
All are welcome to calling hours Wed. June 5 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton, her funeral Thurs. June 6 at 9:30 a.m. from Waitt Funeral Home, funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m. at St. Edith Stein Church and burial at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial gifts may be made to your favorite charity.
