Rose M. (Prouty) Farwell, 90, a lifelong Brocktonian, passed away December 13, 2025. Born in Brockton she was one of 8 children of the late Wilfred C. and Dorothy M. (Lanoue) Prouty and resided at her family homestead for most of her life. Rose graduated from Brockton High School in 1953. Her high school job was as a photography colorist for Loring Studios then after graduation she worked at Douglas Shoe and Randy Shoe. Rose married William F. Rose was a vibrant and colorful character; she spoke with candor and honesty. She was a weekly communicant of St. Edward, St. Nicholas and St. Edith Stein churches. She and Bill were daily walkers at D.W. Field Park and in bad weather at Westgate Mall; she also assisted Bill with delivering excise tax warrants in Brockton. They were known for their annual Christmas Village display at home and for Rose’s dollhouses. She enjoyed sewing, ceramics, baking, wildflower gardening, and thrifting before it was popular, calling herself Secondhand Rose. For over 30 years she and Bill enjoyed summer camping at Seven Maples in Hancock, N. H. Rose was an avid reader especially about Amish life, historical romances, Westerns and Anne of Green Gables series.
Rose was the loving wife of the late William F. Farwell, beloved mother of William Farwell and his wife Susan Beth of Tennessee, James F. “Jay” Farwell and his wife Karen of Brockton, Laura Steeves and her husband Bob of Virginia, Susan Farwell of Virginia and the late Thomas Farwell and his widow Tania of Colorado, grandmother of 13, great-grandmother of 19, sister of the late Janet Davis, Marguerite DeChambeau, Marylyn Grenno, John Prouty, Wilfred Prouty, Joseph Prouty and Richard Prouty, and an aunt of many nieces and nephews.
All are welcome to calling hours Friday December 19th from 9 to 10:30 a.m. and her funeral prayer service at 10:30 a.m. all at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton followed by burial at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
