Richard L. McAvoy, 88, of Whitman, native of Brockton, passed away on May 25, 2021. He served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and worked for the United States Postal Service for over 40 years, retiring as an expediter. After retirement, Dick worked at Waitt Funeral Home for many years. He was a family man and enjoyed relaxing with a Coors Light or a Sam Adams, more recently with a glass of red wine. Dick was a member of the Whitman VFW and Easton American Legion.
Richard was the beloved husband of Jane A. (Carroll) McAvoy; loving father of Kathleen O’Leary (Daniel) of East Bridgewater, James McAvoy (Tracey) of Easton, Lynne Hammond (the late Donald) of Gloucester, Karen “Kelly” Murray of Jacksonville, FL, and John “Jay” McAvoy (Lori) of Inverness, FL; dear grandfather of many; brother of Robert McAvoy of Whitinsville. Dick also leaves his cherished “grand dog” Riggins.
All are welcome to calling hours Wed., June 2nd from 4-7 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. prayer service at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St., Brockton. Private burial at the Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
