Richard D. Long passed away on January 18, 2021 after a long struggle with Lewy Body dementia. He was 87 years old. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of Frank A. Long and Florence (Lynch) Long. He lived in Avon and Brockton before moving to Bridgewater in 2005.
Dick was a graduate of Brockton High School, Boston College and Bridgewater State University. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict. He was retired from the Randolph school system where he taught for 25 years. He also worked for 47 years at the Avon post office, retiring in 2003. An avid fan of local sports, he enjoyed following New England professional, collegiate and high school teams.
A man of calm demeanor, few words and quiet integrity, he was a devoted husband and father, a loving grandpa and a loyal friend.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Janet (Norcross) Long, and their four children, Cynthia (Long) Maricle of Attleboro, Doreen Long of New Hampshire, Daniel Long of Brockton and Matthew (Julie) Long of North Carolina.
Additionally, he is survived by his five grandchildren, Benjamin, Christopher (Ana), Evan and Leah Maricle and Abigail Long and his brothers, Frank A. Long (Marlene) of Florida and David E. Long of Mashpee.
Due to the pandemic, funeral services will be private.
