Mary E. “Skip” Szachowicz (Sweeney), of Brockton, passed away after battling dementia for several years with her husband Michael “Zack” by her side on Saturday, June 21, 2025.
Mary was born April 30, 1945, the eldest daughter of the late John L. Sweeney and the late Mary E. (McLaughlin) Sweeney. She was the sister of the late John L. Sweeney Jr. of Westwood and wife Mary F. of Carver MA, Judith A. and Robert Reed of Mattapoisett MA, Janet M. and Charles Meeker of Loudon, N.H., Michelle R. and Alfred Matta of Naples, FL and Melinda J. Sweeney of Mattapoisett MA.
Mary grew up in the towns of Dedham and Westwood, she graduated from Westwood High School in 1963. A gifted artist and sculptor, she attended Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She worked for many years at Spoontiques, as a sculptor and designer of pewter figurines that sold worldwide. She also worked for T.W. Kutter as an art director and trade show coordinator. Later she worked for Chadwick’s of Boston in executive communications until her retirement.
Mary loved to cook, especially for Sunday dinners and family celebrations. She had an infectious laugh, a great sense of humor, and a quick Irish wit. She enjoyed gambling trips to Las Vegas and Atlantic City with her husband, as well as playing Gin for a penny a point at the kitchen table. Mary always had special love for golden retrievers, in particular her latest, Bailey.
She is survived by her husband, Michael Szachowicz, her sons, John D. Colitti and wife Karen of Abington, MA. Robert L. Colitti of Lighthouse Point, FL., and Matthew T. Colitti of Brockton, MA. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Michael J.A. Colitti, Stephanie E. Colitti, Gabriella R. Colitti, and her great grandson Benjamin J. Colitti, as well as many nieces and nephews.
All are welcome to calling hours Tuesday July 1st from 4 to 7 p.m. at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St, Brockton and her funeral service on Wednesday July 2nd at 10 a.m. at Waitt Funeral Home followed by burial at Knollwood Memorial Park in Canton. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Mass. General Hospital (designate Integrated Care Management Program) in thanks for their excellent home care coordination for Mary.
