Laurel L. (Smith) Hawes, 91, of Avon, passed away February 19, 2025. Born in Meriden, Connecticut, she was the daughter of the late Gilbert and Edith (Baker) Smith. Laurel was devoted to her family of 5 children and love of her life, Bob, who passed in 2010, missing him every day. She enjoyed her time at home tending to her vegetable and flower gardens and could always be found out "in the yard" doing something.
Laurel loved to go shopping and happily spoiled her family on birthdays as they were always celebrated, which included heart felt cards. During Christmas, unwrapping of gifts would continue for hours and she still stuffed the childhood stockings of her adult children with enthusiasm. Laurel welcomed any opportunity to go out for lunch or dinner with her family and looked forward to the Avon VFW meat raffles on Saturdays where many called her "mama".
She was the wife of the late Robert B. Hawes, a Korean War veteran, beloved mother of Robin Reed and her husband Douglas of East Bridgewater, Robert Hawes of Brockton, Tracey Hawes of East Taunton and her longtime companion Bruce Moniz who recently passed, Mark Hawes of Brockton, and Kellie Hawes of Brockton and loving grandmother of Olivia Hawes. Laurel had a special bond with Olivia since birth, being her only grandchild. She was pre-deceased by her only sibling Don Smith who resided in NH.
All are welcome to calling hours Monday, February 24th from 10 a.m. to 12 noon followed by a prayer service at 12 noon, all at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton. Committal at 1:45 p.m. at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne. Memorial gifts may be made to your favorite veteran’s charity or cause.
