Joseph Bertin Bernard, 74, of Brockton, passed away on August 30, 2024. Born in Aux Cayes, Haiti, he was the son of the late Dorelus Bernard and Anna Paul. Bertin immigrated to the United States in 1982, settling in Brockton where he has since called home.
Bertin attended catholic schools in Aux Cayes throughout his youth and later earned a degree from Jean Baptiste Damier Professional School in Port-au-Prince. He was a teacher at Canado Institute in Haiti for many years before moving to the U.S. After his teaching career, Bertin worked for FDT in Avon for 25 years until his retirement. He was also an employee of Walmart in Avon since 1994.
One of the founding members of the Brockton area Haitian catholic community, Bertin was a devoted and active member of Christ the King Parish. He was the treasurer of Brohaco, a Haitian community group, for several years. In his free time, Bertin enjoyed dancing and gardening. He will be missed by all who knew him.
Bertin was the beloved husband of Marie P. (Felix) Bernard for 43 years; cherished father of the late Vince Bernard; loving brother of Paulette Bernard and Denise Bernard, both of Haiti; close cousin of Yves Henry Paul and Claude Paul. Bertin also leaves many additional dear family members, including the Bernard, Felix, Cassamajor, and Paul families.
All are welcome to his wake service on Friday, September 13th from 6-8 p.m. at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 N. Main St., Brockton, his Funeral Mass on Saturday, September 14th at 10 a.m. at Christ the King Parish, 54 Lyman St., Brockton with viewing in the church beginning at 9 a.m. Burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, 95 N. Cary St., Brockton. Live streaming of Bertin’s services will be available.
