Helen Frances (Smith) Nelson, of Abington, Massachusetts, passed away peacefully at home on August 4, 2026, at the remarkable age of 100.
Born in Berkeley, California, Helen was a descendant of pioneering Gold Rush miners and Quakers. She graduated from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and enjoyed a career as a medical secretary and editor.
Helen possessed an adventurous spirit and often shared her experiences of walking through thunderstorms, driving to discover new places and making new friends. She embraced life's adventures with enthusiasm. A proud member of the Greatest Generation, she was a devoted patriot who embodied resilience, independence, and determination.
Even in her 90s, Helen continued to live life to the fullest. She faithfully attended the gym each week and took up Tae Kwon Do, earning a black belt—a testament to her extraordinary perseverance and strength. She especially treasured the freedom of being outdoors, often taking long walks through her neighborhood. Her determination and strong spirit in her later years inspired everyone who knew her, especially her family.
Above all else, Helen's greatest joy was her family. Her love for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren gave her strength through life's many challenges and remained her greatest source of happiness. Her courage and unwavering love will be deeply missed and forever remembered.
Helen is survived by her loving children: Elizabeth Sutherland, Marianne Roscoe (Joe Roscoe) Thomas Nelson (Charlotte Hebert) and James Nelson. She also leaves behind her cherished grandchildren: Chip Sutherland (Ashley Joler), Amy Alles (Harry Alles IV), Nicholas Roscoe (Hannah Phillips), Nathan Roscoe, Carina Serreze and Evan Nelson (Lydia Allen). She was the proud great-grandmother of Cole Sutherland, Harry Sutherland, Abigail Roscoe, Alice Roscoe, and Harry Alles V. Helen was predeceased by her beloved husband of many years, Gilbert M. Nelson.
Burial will be private. A Celebration of Life will be held in October, with details to be announced.
