Getachew Habteh-Yimer peacefully transitioned to eternal rest at home, on October 20th 2024. Getachew was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and raised by his parents; the late Abebech (Abaye) Kassaye and Habteyimer (Kaptimer) Woube.
As a young boy, Getachew soaked in the richness of his Amhara culture, filling his heart with a strong faith and strengthening his body with lots of injera and Sega wot. Getachew had a deep love for the game of soccer as well and played throughout his youth. As he matured, he developed a love of learning and went on to study economics at The State University of New York at Albany. Getachew immersed himself in the University, playing Varsity Soccer, joining The Potter Club Fraternity, and being part of the International Student Organization. Here, he met many lifelong friends, including Darlene, the love of his life. Getachew earned his Master’s Degree, relocated to Boston, and went on to build a thriving career working for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Division of healthcare, finance and policy.
Throughout his life, Getachew had a passion for supporting Darlene's love for travel; mostly following her lead in going on adventurous family trips. They loved to explore nature & visit new places together. By each other's side, they visited hundreds of National Parks, Sanctuaries and Nature Preserves. They made their fondest memories on a cross-country road trip that took them to Zion National Park, the Grand Canyon, Yellowstone, and just about everywhere in between that they could drive to. Getachew loved exploring the world that God so perfectly created, and in his later years became enamored with different species of birds.
As a father, Getachew was not only present, but deeply involved in all of the important milestones for Tsion and Henok's formative years. Whether he was supporting as a soccer coach or camping alongside the Boy Scout troop, Getachew was there in all the ways that mattered most. He was warm in spirit, firm in holding his children to high expectations, and generous in heart.
Getachew had an unending curiosity for exploring the Bible through relationships & was an active member at The Anglican Parish of Saint Paul. In later years he became a member of Christ Congregational Church in Brockton where he cherished the opportunity to serve Brockton UCC as a Deacon, alongside Henok and other beloved church members. Getachew loved so many people near and far, especially his late sisters, his cousins, nieces and nephews who were tremendously dear to his heart. He loved to host family from back home, often for months at a time. Like many grandparents though, Getachew was absolutely enamored with his grandchildren. He adored watching Sanjna grow from an early reader, learning phonics with her Grandmother, to becoming a Brockton high school graduate in 2022. Getachew cherished the many adventures enjoyed with Jahannes and Salomé, attending all of their theatre and music performances, going out for brunch and going to Jayce's rugby games. When he became a grandfather to Jayce, he was affectionately nicknamed "Grandtachew".
Getachew is survived by his children, Tsion Sharma, and Henok Kaptimer (and his wife, Lauren); and his grandchildren, Sanjna, Jayce, Jahannes and Salomé; all residing in Brockton; along with many cousins, nieces and nephews.
