George Mitchell Sr., 92, of Brockton, passed away on August 29, 2025. Born in Wadley, Georgia, he was the son of the late Roxanne (Hall) and Pughsley Mitchell. George migrated North in the early 1950s, living in Taunton, Massachusetts before making a home in Brockton.
He was gifted with his hands and loved woodworking, including furniture making, and was also a talented baker. Dedicated to his faith, George was a Deacon of his church, Judah Praise Tabernacle in Brockton. He enjoyed politics and current affairs. George was a man of few words, but blessed with a sharp wit, he was always ready with a joke. Above all, he adored his wife Joesell and was most proud of his family.
George was the devoted husband of Joesell (Williams) Mitchell for 74 wonderful years; beloved father of Helen Phillip and her husband Hilario of Maryland, George Mitchell Jr. and his wife Mary of Massachusetts, Betty J. Radford and her husband Perry of Maryland, Barbara J. Knight and her husband Robert of Massachusetts, Rev. JoeAnn M. Walker and her husband Anthony of Massachusetts, and Tonita Mitchell (Ricardo Morrison) of Massachusetts; cherished grandfather of a host of grandchildren and great-grandchildren and an uncle to many nieces and nephews. George was preceded in death by his parents and his siblings Isaac “Buddy” Mitchell, Pughsley Mitchell Jr., Elnora Thompson, Rosetta Strowbridge, and James Robert Youman.
Family and friends are welcome to his viewing on Thursday, September 11th from 10-11 a.m., followed by an 11 a.m. homegoing service at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St., Brockton. Burial to follow at Melrose Cemetery, 88 North Pearl St., Brockton.
