Fritz Lahens Obituary

Fritz Raymond “Toto” Lahens, 77, of Brockton, passed away on November 2, 2021. Born in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, he was a son of the late Murat Lahens and Auxilia Liautaud. He had lived between the United States and Haiti for many years. Fritz was well educated, first studying Civil Engineering in Haiti, then continuing his studies in Venezuela where he earned a degree in Health Engineering.

He had a sharp mind and excelled at mathematics. In his youth, Fritz would help his siblings with their math homework and when he became a father in later years, offered his children the same help. Studious, Fritz could often be found with a book in hand and spoke French, Haitian Creole, Spanish, and English fluently. Until 2015, Lahens the engineer worked in various departments of the Ministry of Health in Haiti and oversaw projects meaningful to the control of disease in the country.

He was an influential figure for the game of basketball in Port-au-Prince. He was a well-respected coach to young players and mentor to many coaches. He enjoyed coaching and playing basketball, watching soccer, and baking cakes. Fritz loved to dance and attended Salsa and Merengue dance classes. Young Toto went to Catholic primary school and sang at the local church choir. He will be remembered as the loudest voice or personality on the domino table and on the basketball court. His compassionate and generous nature, and dapper style will not be forgotten.

Fritz was the beloved husband of Marie Nicole (Mondesir) Lahens for 50 years; loving father of Raymond Lahens and his wife Mindy Lahens of New Jersey, Jeffrey Lahens and his wife Dr. Charmain Jackman of Massachusetts, and Carina Fils-Julien and her husband Rodney Fils-Julien of Maryland; devoted grandfather of Leilani, Sydney Fritz, Simone, Carissa, Eliza, and Rodrick; brother of Gertha Lahens, Dr. Roger Lahens and his wife Thèrése Damas, Ghislaine Lahens, Carole St-Aubin and her husband Reynold St-Aubin, and Yvane Lahens; and a cousin, uncle, and friend of many.
