Deborah Sampson Edwards of Hingham, MA, and Wareham, MA, died Saturday, February 15th at South Shore Hospital following a short illness. Debbie, as she was known, celebrated her 85th birthday last fall. She was married to J. Michael Edwards for 58 years who was the love of her life having been childhood friends on Little Harbor Beach where both their families had summer homes. She was predeceased by her parents Kenneth and Priscilla Sampson of Brockton and her brothers Kenneth Sampson, of Belmont, MA and Thomas Sampson of Easton, MA. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
Debbie was born and raised in Brockton, MA graduating from Brockton High School in 1957. She attended Wellesley College followed by Kathrine Gibbs in NYC. She later worked for Attorney Needham in Boston, then Attorney Masson in Brockton as a legal secretary. Debbie & Mike lovingly and tediously restored their Historical home in Raynham then spent their weekends during the summer enjoying their summer cottage on Little Harbor Beach.
They spent two years in Amsterdam when Mike’s job transferred him there. Debbie immersed herself in the culture and they enjoyed showing off the region when the Walt Edwards family visited. Debbie was an avid reader, and they rescued several dogs during their time together. Debbie got “Debbie” dog, named by the breeder and she kept the name which created fun questioning exchanges when on dog walks at Linden Ponds! “Debbie” was such a comfort to her the last 3 years of her life and wonderful to see their connection when family visited.
Visitation is from 10-11 a.m. on Saturday, March 1st at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 No. Main Street, Brockton, MA, followed by a burial service at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton. Donations in her memory may be made online to www.aspca.org.
