Alice Shirley (Harrington) Bettle

Alice Shirley Bettle died at age 94 on May 24, 2018. She was the wife of Roger M. Bettle for 64 years until his death in 2011. Shirley was the oldest daughter of William and Mary Harrington. She graduated from Brockton High School in 1941 and from the Faulkner School of Nursing in 1946. For 16 years she worked as an RN in the obstetrics unit at the Phaneuf Hospital and then at the Cardinal Cushing Hospital until her retirement in 1979. She enjoyed dances with her husband at the Elks, cruises, and trips to casinos. An accomplished craftswoman, she formed a sewing group called the DYD with a group of friends, as well as a weekly card-playing group. In recent years, she was a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Brockton. Shirley is survived by five children: Patricia Baylor, Bernard Bettle, Nancy Upham, Barbara Packard, and Bonnie Bettle; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and cousins, especially Alicia Thurberg and her family. She was predeceased by her daughter Mary Eunice Bettle and her son Donald (Pudge) Bettle. She was the sister of the late Beverly Fonseca and Paul and Thomas Harrington. Shirley’s family would like to thank the Baywood Unit at Baypointe for its care over the past year. Calling hours will be Tuesday 9:30-11:00 a.m. in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St, Brockton, followed by a funeral Mass at 11:30 a.m. in St. Edith Stein Church and burial at Melrose Cemetery.
