Alfred R. “Fred” Ryan, 87, of Bridgewater, formerly of Brockton, died at Life Care Center, West Bridgewater on September 2, 2023 surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Brockton, he was the son of the late William J. and Clara G. (Prosper) Ryan. Fred was the husband of Shirley A. (Ely) Ryan for 65 wonderful years.
In addition to being a family man, he had a long-accomplished career in the corporate finance space. Fred was a 1956 graduate of Brockton H.S. He earned his M.B.A. from Babson College and his Bachelor of Accounting from Bentley University. He was a member of the National Guard. Fred worked for Bird Inc., a manufacturer of asphalt roofing and vinyl siding. He then retired from Shaw’s Supermarket Corp. Office. Fred worked as a financial controller, director of strategic planning and systems development.
He was past President and Director of the Boston Chapter of Planning Executives Institutes, member of the Institute of Management of Accountants, and participated in the Harvard/M.I.T. Joint Center for Housing Development Studies. As an avid joker, Alfred was full of life and loved to make people laugh; he was a talented bowler and loved taking trips with his wife.
Fred is survived by his beloved wife, son Alfred R. Ryan Jr. of Brockton, daughter Judi A. Benson and her husband Wayne of N. Easton, two beloved and cherished grandchildren Eric R. Benson, Esq. (fiancé Jose Aquilar) and James R. Benson, daughter-in-law Elaine M. Ryan (former wife of Alfred R. Ryan Jr.) of Brockton, sister Charlene Derrickson of West Bridgewater, and many nieces and nephews. Fred was predeceased by his grandson Daniel R. Benson, daughter-in-law Kathleen P. Ryan, and his siblings William Ryan, Joanne Finch, Michael Ryan, and Maxine Ryan.
All are welcome to calling hours Sun., Sept. 10th from 1-4 p.m. at Waitt Funeral Home, 850 N. Main St., Brockton, his funeral service Mon., Sept. 11th at 11 a.m. at Waitt Funeral Home and burial at Melrose Cemetery, Brockton.
