William Lloyd Obituary

William Lloyd, 83, of Brockton, formerly of Boston MA, passed away peacefully on July 17, 2018 after failing health. A son of the late Sam and Rebecca (Thames) Lloyd, he was born in Manning, South Carolina on March 23, 1935. He served honorably in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Bill was a meat cutter by trade; he worked for Freedom Foods in Dorchester over 30 years ago as a meat manager.  It was the first black-owned supermarket chain in the area. Bill and his wife had enjoyed owning variety stores in Boston in the 1970’s, first Lloyd’s Market in Dorchester, and later B & R Variety in Mattapan. After moving from Dorchester to Brockton, Bill continued to manage his store. Later he worked for Bill's Taxi Service and Save-A-Lot. He was a Mason for over 40 years at Prince Hall Lodge in Grove Hall. He proudly managed the Silver Lining Gospel Group for almost 37 years and considered them family.  Bill was the beloved husband of Rosa Lee (Conyers) Lloyd for almost 58 years; loving father of Carolyn Lloyd, Charlene Lloyd Miller and her husband Shawn Vincent Miller, Dareen Lloyd Martin and Marilyn Conyers; dear grandfather of Anthony Lloyd, Evan Martin, Lee, Susan and the late Setzer Conyers. Preceding him in death were his siblings Sam Jr. and his daughter Helen; Willie (Mood) and his wife Rhunette and their son Nathaniel; Rose Harris and her 3 children, Eddie, Cynthia and Ronald. Bill was also the loving uncle of Willie Lloyd and his wife Shirley and their sons; Major Lloyd and his wife Christine and their sons; Annette Lloyd Calvin and her son and daughter; the late Nathaniel Lloyd and his daughters. Bill leaves behind a host of family and friends who love him dearly. A private family viewing was held.
