Sister M. Christine Kleponis Obituary

Sister Marie Christine Kleponis CJC, a Poor Sister of Jesus Crucified and the Sorrowful Mother, died on Sept. 4, 2018 after a brief illness. Born and educated in South Boston, Louise Kleponis was a daughter of the late Peter and Elizabeth (Kudrevich) Kleponis of Lithuania.  Attracted to religious life she joined the Sisters of Jesus Crucified at their motherhouse in Brockton; there she received the name of “Sr. Marie Christine”. She studied and received an AB in Elementary Education with a major in English from Stonehill College, N. Easton.  She later earned her MS in Library Science and Administration from Marywood College, Scranton, PA. Sr. Christine has resided in Pennsylvania, Connecticut, and Massachusetts fulfilling congregational works in the field of education.  She retained the roles of teacher of religion, director of altar boys, parish office worker, a team teacher, grade-school teacher and principal.  In Pennsylvania she was on staff in Holy Trinity, Wilkes Barre; St. Michael, Scranton; Annunciation, Frackville.  In Connecticut she was at St. Christopher School, East Hartford.  In Massachusetts she served at St. Francis, Lawrence; St. Peter, South Boston; St. Peter, Dorchester; st. Casimir School in Brockton and at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent, Brockton. Within the congregation Sr. Christine held positions as director of temporary professed Sisters, community supervisor of schools, director of vocations and retreats, member of the General Council and member of the CJC Corporation.  She coordinated the Annual Labor Day Picnic at Our Lady of Sorrows Convent. Sr. Christine was often elected or invited to area leadership.  She was vice-president of the Board of Directors of the South Boston Neighborhood House, president of the archdiocesan Elementary School Principals Assoc of Boston; responsible for writing the history of the association; coordinator of South Boston Clergy and Religious Assoc; and several times the coordinator of self-growth evaluation and accreditation of elementary parochial schools. In her elder years, Sr. Christine continued her activities through outreach work. Survived by her sisters and brothers: Vincent and and Anne Kleponis of South Boston; Frances (Kleponis) Zinka of Medford; Virginia (Kleponis) Laufer of Saverna Park, MD; she was predeceased by her brother Albert and sisters Mary and Joan.  Also survived by many devoted nieces and nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. All are welcome to calling hours Friday, Sept. 7 from 3-7 p.m. in Our Lady of Sorrows Convent, 261 Thatcher Street, Brockton, her funeral Mass Sat. Sept. 8 at 12 noon in OLS Convent Chapel, and burial at the Convent Cemetery. Memorial contributions in her name may be made to the Poor Sisters of Jesus Crucified, 261 Thatcher St., Brockton, MA 02302.
