Vincent P. Gruntmeyer, 73, of Maine, formerly of Wareham and Brockton, and a retired Brockton Fire Department Captain, died August 20, 2017 after a brief illness. Born in Brockton, he was a son of the late Eva and Victor Gruntmeyer. Vinny graduated from Brockton High School in 1961 and served in the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. He became a firefighter in his hometown of Brockton and later earned an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science from Massasoit Community College. Vinny was an avid hunter and fisherman in Massachusetts and Maine where he loved the great outdoors. He enjoyed dining out with family and creative cooking. Vinny held many memberships including the Polish White Eagles, the Elks, the American Legion and the Fraternal Order of Eagles. He was the loving father of Karen of Plymouth; friend and former husband of Ruth of Lakeville; brother of Janet Eldridge of Cornish, Maine and the late Paula Belanger; and a beloved uncle. All are welcome to calling hours Thursday 4-7 p.m. with a 7 p.m. prayer service in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St. Brockton. For those wishing to attend, a committal service will be held Friday at 10:30 a.m. at Massachusetts National Cemetery, Bourne.
