Robert E. Hughes, 78, a lifelong resident of Brockton, died peacefully surrounded by his family on April 21, 2017. He was a son of the late Ellsworth and Abbie (McLaren) Hughes and brother of the late John Hughes. Bob worked primarily in photography labs and was an avid reader. Bob was known for his vast knowledge of all sports specifically Boston teams. He was the go to guy for any sports related questions or advice. There was never a stat that he did not know. He grew up as an athlete and passed that athleticism onto his 4 children. He coached and cheered them on at every game or event. He was known for his love of 50s rock n roll music and his dance moves. Family and friends always enjoyed a good Bob Hughes story with his quick wit and good sense of humor. Dedicated to his family, Bob was the beloved husband of Joan A. (McDonough) Hughes since 1981; loving father of Karen Smathers of Canton, NC, Kyle Hughes (and Robin) of Berwick, ME, Lindsay Dahlquist (and Eric) and Katie Rosa (and Manuel), all of Brockton; devoted grandfather of Ashley and Dylan Smathers, Lukas Hughes, Dominic Dahlquist, Jackson and Maxwell Rosa; dear great-grandfather of Landon Smathers; and an uncle of many. All are welcome to calling hours Thursday 4-7 p.m. in Waitt Funeral Home, 850 North Main St., Brockton and his funeral Friday at 10:30 a.m. in Waitt Funeral Home. Cremation and private committal. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to Alzheimer’s Association.
